“What is wrong with me?”
Feeling happy is not a part of your life anymore. Everyday tasks take much more energy and effort than usual; sometimes, you do not even want to get out of bed.
You may feel irritable or angry constantly, snapping at your family and co-workers.
Perhaps you have experienced an extremely difficult or frightening experience and cannot stop thinking about it. You might even be having nightmares or flashbacks.
It could be that you do not seem to be making progress toward your life goals, or perhaps you are not even sure what your goals are or where to start setting them.
Life is a challenge.
You try to talk to people whom you trust, like family members or friends. They are generally supportive and try to give helpful advice, but they do not understand your feelings.
As time passes, it also seems that family members are increasingly frustrated at your continued struggles. Maybe they tell you to “get over it already,” which feels hurtful.
You might have tried to “snap out of it” by looking at self-help books or websites. Maybe you have watched TikTok or YouTube videos and are looking for help. Some of it makes sense, but you are still struggling.
Therapy can make a difference.
At Utah Psychological Associates, we offer a compassionate, confidential, and supportive environment where you can explore your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors with the help of our skilled mental health professionals.
Individual therapy is a powerful tool for working through challenges, gaining insight into oneself, and achieving one’s mental health and life goals.
Whether you are facing ongoing mental health challenges or navigating a specific life situation, individual therapy provides the dedicated time and space to focus on your well-being.
This one-on-one support helps you:
Understand yourself better: Deeply explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Build coping skills: Learn healthy strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and more.
Enhance emotional resilience: Strengthen your ability to face life’s challenges confidently.
Set personal goals: Create actionable plans for personal growth and well-being.
Heal from past trauma: Work through unresolved issues and create a path to emotional healing.
Who can benefit from individual therapy?
Individual therapy can be helpful for anyone experiencing:
- Anxiety, stress, panic attacks, depression or low mood
- Grief and loss, trauma, or PTSD
- Relationship issues, life transitions (e.g., career changes, moving, or loss), self-esteem or confidence issues, existential concerns (meaning and purpose), anger
- management, or difficulties with emotional regulation
- Chronic pain or illness
- Addiction or substance use challenges
Here are some approaches we use.
We believe in offering an approach tailored to your unique needs and goals. Depending on your situation, our therapists may use a combination of evidence-based methods.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used approach that helps you identify and change negative thought patterns, improving your emotional responses and behaviors. While we do not offer full model DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), our therapists are familiar with many DBT skills. They can help you improve relationships, cope with stress, and manage emotions. In some situations, we can partner with other service providers so that you can attend their skills groups while we provide individual therapy and phone coaching.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy incorporates mindfulness techniques to help you stay present, reduce stress, and enhance emotional regulation.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) combines mindfulness and behavioral therapy to help you embrace your thoughts and feelings rather than fight or avoid them. The primary goal is to encourage psychological flexibility, which involves being open to difficult emotions, thoughts, and sensations while committing to behaviors that align with one’s values. ACT emphasizes living a rich, meaningful life by accepting life’s inevitable discomforts and learning how to deal with them effectively while staying committed to one’s values and goals.
Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, collaborative approach to therapy that focuses on helping you explore and resolve ambivalence and inner conflict about behavior change.
Solution-Focused Therapy is a goal-oriented approach that enables you to identify solutions to challenges and work toward achieving them.
Here is what to expect.
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, but our team will guide you every step of the way.
Initial Consultation: During your first session, we will discuss your background, concerns, and therapy goals. This is an opportunity to get to know your therapist and decide if they are a good fit.
Ongoing Sessions: Therapy typically involves weekly or bi-weekly sessions during which you engage in open dialogue with your therapist. Together, you will explore your challenges, work on personal development, and track your progress.
Confidentiality: Everything you share in therapy is confidential. Your therapist will respect your privacy and only share information if required by law or with your consent.
Take the first step toward healing.
You do not have to face life’s challenges alone. Individual therapy is one-on-one interaction with a highly trained individual, primarily focused on your life transformation.
There is no judgment here – only support as you explore personal issues and find solutions.
